As a returning DYU customer, I already own the compact and foldable A1 model, which is perfect for travel and short-distance rides. However, I needed something bigger and more secure for my daily use—something more suited to longer rides. That’s why I decided to go for the DYU C5, and I’ve been riding it regularly for the past six months, through both winter and now spring. I waited to give it a proper test before writing this review.
The C5 is a modern and very comfortable e-bike with impressive range—it can handle several round trips before needing a recharge, and it’s definitely not afraid of long-distance journeys. On the road, it feels sturdy and agile, almost like a mountain bike. The front suspension is a great feature that smooths out vibrations and bumps, making rides much more enjoyable.
One of the biggest highlights for me is the throttle on the handlebar. It's incredibly helpful for starting up quickly at traffic lights, getting through uphill climbs, or just giving your legs a break when you're feeling tired—it lets you ride effortlessly in those moments. The only tiny downside is that there's a 2 to 3-second delay when using the throttle before the motor kicks in, so it’s not instant.
The C5 also handles well on country roads, though I wouldn't recommend it for rough, rocky terrain. I even use it for grocery shopping, and even when it's loaded, it runs smoothly. Thanks to the throttle, I don’t feel the extra weight at all.
The build quality and materials are excellent, but to maximize comfort and safety, I’d like to share a few tips based on my experience:
Recommended Improvements & Maintenance Tips:
- Upgrade the seat: The original fixed saddle can feel uncomfortable, especially on bumpy roads. I suggest replacing it with a spring-loaded seat for better shock absorption.
- Motor speed setting & derailleur issue: If you ride with the motor set to level 2 or 3 and exceed 25 km/h, the derailleur system can become unresponsive and even change gears unexpectedly, which may be stressful, especially during braking. I recommend setting the motor to level 0 when you're going downhill or riding fast to avoid this issue.
- Brake maintenance: Clean the brake pads at least once a month using a specialized disc brake cleaner and a soft cloth. This helps prevent wear, noise, and ensures smoother braking.
- Chain care: Don't forget to clean and lubricate the chain regularly using a derailleur-specific oil (available at most bike shops). This keeps the chain from drying out and prevents dirt from clogging the mechanism.
- Security tip: I installed a bike alarm, and I highly recommend it. It goes off with any movement and helps deter theft. Pair it with a solid U-lock for better security.
- Better horn for city traffic: The default bell is fine for pedestrians, but not enough for busy urban streets. I added a 120dB electronic horn for cars and traffic, and I use the original bell for quieter zones.
- Ride safe: Always wear a helmet, cycling gloves, and a reflective yellow vest for visibility and protection.
Happy riding and stay safe out there! 🚴♂️⚡
